How to Look Natural in Headshots Without Feeling Awkward
If you want to know how to look natural in headshots, here is the first thing to understand: natural-looking professional portraits usually do not happen because someone simply said, “Relax and act natural.”
They happen because the photographer gives useful direction until you stop having to think about what your face and body are doing.

How to Look Natural in Headshots: Stop Trying So Hard
The moment a camera appears, people become aware of things they normally never think about: shoulders, eyes, smile, chin, posture, and whether they look normal.
Good direction removes that burden. Instead of asking you to judge yourself while being photographed, I give you one small adjustment at a time.
You don’t need to know how to look natural. You need enough direction that you can stop thinking about it.
7 Ways to Look More Natural in a Professional Headshot
1. Do Not Hold One Smile Forever
A held smile often becomes less believable the longer it stays frozen. Moving in and out of expressions creates much more natural transitions.
2. Let Your Eyes Participate
The mouth is only part of expression. Small changes around the eyes can make a photograph feel more engaged and confident.
3. Reset Between Frames
Subtle movement prevents your body and expression from becoming rigid.
4. Use Good Posture Without Becoming a Statue
Professional posture should feel intentional but not stiff.
5. Let the Photographer Direct the Jawline
Small changes to the head and neck can dramatically change how the face photographs.
6. Talk During the Session
Conversation, humor, and interaction can help break the pattern of simply waiting for the camera to fire.
7. Create Several Expressions
You do not need one universal “headshot face.” Warm, confident, serious, energetic, and approachable versions may all be useful.

What If You Think You’re Not Photogenic?
Being comfortable in photographs is not a personality trait.
Most people have simply never spent much time in front of a professionally controlled camera with someone coaching them through the details.
That is why I build expression coaching and guided posing into every headshot session.
Natural Does Not Mean Casual
A headshot can be polished, carefully lit, professionally retouched, and still look completely believable.
“Natural” means the expression feels consistent with the person. Someone who knows you should look at the image and recognize the version of you they actually interact with. For the bigger picture, see what makes a good professional headshot.
