FAQs for a Successful Headshot Session

For essential tips on preparing for a successful headshot session, read below. From outfit choices to professional grooming advice, these guidelines will help you achieve the perfect shot.

When choosing your outfit for a headshot session, it’s important to avoid bulky clothing like thick sweaters, busy patterns, loud colors, and wrinkled clothing. Instead, opt for a nice jacket, black or white shirts, pastel-colored shirts, button-ups, and tank tops for women. These choices help keep the focus on you and ensure a clean, professional look in your photos.

For women, it’s best to arrive with your hair and makeup ready, keeping makeup natural and light. You can always add more while on set, so bring your makeup kit for touchups. Jewelry should not be overly large or attention-grabbing, and no jewelry is also an option. If you prefer a ponytail, remember to bring a pony holder. Glossy lips are preferred, so avoid matte lipstick. The goal is to ensure the focus remains on you and your headshot.

For men, come well-groomed, with a clean shave or a nicely trimmed beard. Avoid the neck beard if unshaven. Keep hair clean and groomed, avoiding products that look wet or greasy. Wear lip balm the day before to avoid cracked lips. Avoid wearing a hat and sunglasses prior to the photos. If your shirt is see-through, try to avoid an undershirt. Bring a couple of tie options and don’t hesitate to show some personality. Tie a full or double Windsor knot to complete your look.

If you’d like professional hair and makeup services, the very talented Abbi Chartrand of Lethal Looks Salon is available. Please allow 2-3 weeks of advance notice for booking. Hair and makeup rates start at $130, with an additional $75 per hour for touchups if needed. While this is optional, it is highly recommended to ensure you look your best for your headshots.

The day before your session, double-check your schedule to ensure you have everything in order. Make sure your clothing is chosen, prepped, wrinkle-free, and ready. It’s a good idea to try on your outfit beforehand to ensure it still fits as expected. Get a good night’s rest to avoid bags and dark circles under your eyes.

On the day of your session, try to arrive a few minutes early. Clean your glasses, double-check your hair, face, and wardrobe, and then relax. I will assist with the finer details to ensure you look polished and professional. Throughout the session, I will coach you on your expression, stance, and address any concerns you may have, ensuring we capture the best possible headshots.

A headshot session usually lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the number of outfit changes and the level of customization needed. Sessions are designed to be efficient while ensuring you get the perfect shot.
